Job Summary:
The Bus Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining buses and other fleet vehicles to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This role requires a strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, brakes, hydraulics, and preventative maintenance procedures.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on buses, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid level checks.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, and suspension components.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure all buses meet regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities.
  • Use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess vehicle issues.
  • Replace worn or defective parts and test repairs to ensure proper functioning.
  • Work collaboratively with other mechanics and fleet supervisors to prioritize tasks.
  • Respond to road calls and emergency breakdowns when needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment and adhere to safety protocols.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical training in automotive/diesel technology preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience as a mechanic, preferably with buses or heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical diagnostics, and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to use diagnostic software and tools.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy parts, work in confined spaces, and perform labor-intensive tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required or preferred.

Work Environment:

  • Garage or repair shop setting; occasional work outdoors or roadside.
  • May involve exposure to noise, grease, fumes, and heavy machinery.
  • Requires lifting, bending, standing, and manual dexterity.
